Winter Casting Sessions

The winter casting sessions originated as a way for OFS members to fight off the winter blues and work out some of the rust that may have crept into their casting strokes. Today the winter casting sessions are enjoyed by both members as well as non-members that are thinking of taking up fly fishing. Today's casting sessions are best described as a mix of socializing, practice, instruction and experimenation. Experienced members are always happy to provide pointers and instruction for novice casters.

The sessions are also a good place to try out new and different rods before spending your money on a rod that may not fit your casting profile.

If you're interested in participating in one or more of the Winter Casting Sessions, you can find the dates, location and fee structure in the 2012 Winter Casting Schedule.

A few suggestions if you attend:

  • Sinking lines are not recommended for indoor casting.
  • If you have an older fly line use it rather than your brand new or expensive line, otherwise you will need give your line a good cleaning prior to the fishing season.
  • Don't use your expensive tapered leaders. At some point you'll probably get it cought in a basketball net. Six (6) feet of straight mono with a small tuft of coloured wool works perfectly well.
